    2024 Athletics Recap

As the seasons change in Ignacio, the community reflects on the achievements of its student-athletes during an eventful fall sports season that wrapped up in mid-November. From the track to the football field and the volleyball court, Ignacio’s Bobcats gave it their all, showcasing talent, resilience, and sportsmanship.

    Cross Country Success

The boys cross country team qualified for the state competition, where they competed against other 2A schools across Colorado. Junior Trace Crane emerged as a standout, placing 30th at the state meet. His performance at the regional meet earned him the SJBL Runner of the Year. His impressive performance earned him an All State Honorable Mention and the title of San Juan Basin League (SJBL) Runner of the Year. Crane and fellow junior James Martin were both recognized as All Conference Runners for their stellar performances throughout the season.

    Football’s Strong Finish

Ignacio’s football team came tantalizingly close to a playoff berth but fell just short. Despite this, they had a remarkable season and are looking forward to next year with most of their roster returning, losing only five seniors. The team’s achievements were recognized with multiple All Conference honors. Junior Lincoln deKay, Junior Gabriel Archuleta, Sophomore Cayson Burcham, and Junior Zane Pontine earned 1st Team All Conference honors. Seniors Charley Pargin and Kendrick Nossaman, along with Junior DJ Hendren, were named to the 2nd Team All Conference, while Freshman Miguel Red received an All Conference Honorable Mention.

    Volleyball Shines in Regional Play

The volleyball team also had an impressive season, making it to regional play. They are looking forward to next year since they will have most of their players returning, losing only four seniors from their program. Sophomore Kelly Sirios’ exceptional skills earned her 1st Team All Conference honors and an All State Honorable Mention. Seniors Marissa Olguin and Ollyvia Howe were named to the 2nd Team All Conference, closing out their high school careers on a high note.

    Looking Ahead to Winter Sports

With the fall season concluded, the focus now shifts to winter sports. Boys and girls basketball teams are in the midst of their seasons, with league play set to begin at home on January 18th against Pagosa Springs. Basketball regionals will take place on March 7th and 8th, with the state tournament scheduled for March 13th to 15th.

Meanwhile, boys and girls wrestling teams are competing in weekend tournaments as they aim to qualify for state. Ignacio High School will proudly host the 2A Region 2 Boys Wrestling Tournament on February 7th and 8th, while the girls team will travel to La Junta for their regional competition. The state wrestling tournament is set for February 13th to 15th.

    Spring Sports on the Horizon

As winter sports heat up, plans are already underway for spring. Track, girls soccer, and baseball practices will begin on February 24th. A parent meeting will be held to kick off the spring sports season and provide important updates.

Ignacio’s student-athletes continue to make their school and community proud, demonstrating dedication and excellence in every competition. The future looks bright for Bobcat sports, with plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
